Why we play
The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation
and the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA
have teamed up to fulfill our shared goal of improving kids' lives. Hockey de Rue
is a joint street hockey tournament benefiting underprivileged kids in Greater Montreal. Together we help kids realize their potential through vital programs that serve the local community.
The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation and the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA believe recreation facilities and resources should be accessible to everyone. Sports and recreation contribute to the development, health, wellness and self-confidence of youth, providing them with the building blocks for success. #hockeyderue
The Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation
The Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation
encourages physical activity and the adoption of a healthy lifestyle among underprivileged youth from 4 to 17 years old. Since its inception in August 2000, the Foundation has donated over $27 million to over 755 charitable endeavours throughout the province of Quebec working for the well-being of underprivileged children.
The Foundation fulfills its mandate in two ways: first, through a unique flagship project – the BLEU BLANC BOUGE program – which consists of building community refrigerated and multisport rinks; secondly, by providing financial support to organizations whose projects and programs enable children to adopt healthy lifestyles by being more active. Bleu Blanc Bouge facts
Since the opening of our first outdoor rink in 2009, more than 400,000 people have been active on the eight rinks located in the boroughs of Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension, Montreal-Nord, Verdun, LaSalle and Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, as well as in the cities of Longueuil, Laval and Sherbrooke. Additionally, two new ice rinks are currently under construction in the borough of Ahunstic-Cartierville and in the city of Trois-Rivières, with their opening scheduled for winter 2018. The implementation of this infrastructure has already helped provide nearly 50,000 hours of free access to high-quality sports equipment for the children and citizens of the neighborhoods where they are located. Over 97,000 kids did so as part of an activity supervised either by their school or by a community group. The Foundation also holds clinics initiating first and second-grade students to skating with the BLEU BLANC BOUGE IN ACTION 6-week program which yearly offers over 300 elementary school children an opportunity to enjoy physical activities within an organized framework, to adopt healthy lifestyles, to socialize and to develop teamwork – all in a secure and safe environment.
The Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA: Purpose. Passion. Presence.
The Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA
(the Y) provides quality services to promote the social, cultural, recreational, physical and intellectual needs of over 10,000 members, users and guests. The organization reaches out to all age groups, focusing on children, youth and young adults. The Y encourages health and wellness by subsidizing youth team sports programs and by running a Teen Fitness & Wellness Program; whose aim is to help overweight or inactive teens incorporate healthy lifestyle practices into their daily lives through physical activity, proper nutrition and healthy life planning. The Y rewards athletic excellence with educational scholarships through the Jean Beliveau Athlete of the Year award.
The Y offers membership subsidies to underprivileged kids and their families to stay physically active and connected. With a policy of “no one denied access” regardless of ability to fully pay, the Y removes barriers and provides access to services designed to help youth reach their potential.
The Y has a unique Special Needs Department
specifically designed to develop and deliver leisure and recreational services to children, youth and adults with special needs and to include them in life at the Y. Programming includes day camps, swimming and art programs. Further, the buddy and shadow programs allow special needs youngsters to enjoy the full spectrum of the Y’s activities.
A cornerstone of the Y’s family is the Harry Bronfman Y Country Camp
- a place where campers and counselors join together to build friendships and memories that last a lifetime. It provides a friendly, supportive and cooperative atmosphere that fosters self-esteem and independence through sports, arts, nature and outdoor adventures. Campers are encouraged to make new friends, try new activities, develop new skills, and have fun!
